The old keeper of the keys is dead, and the creature who ate her is the volatile Lady of the Capricious House―Anatema, an enormous humanoid spider with a taste for laudanum and human brides.
Dália, the old keeper’s protégée, must take up her duties, locking and unlocking the little drawers in which Anatema keeps her memories. And if she can unravel the crime that led to her predecessor’s death, Dália might just be able to survive long enough to grow into her new role.
But there’s a gaping hole in Dália’s plan that she refuses to see: Anatema cannot resist a beautiful woman, and she eventually devours every single bride that crosses her path.
⤖ My Review ⬻
I saw nothing but rave reviews for Hache Pueyo’s But Not Too Bold, and I also wanted to read more novellas this year, so I decided to give it a try. Right off the bat, I knew that I absolutely loved the writing! The ebb and flow of the words hooked me from the first, and I adored the world Pueyo’s words were building in my mind—it felt magical, surreal, but still believable somehow.
I found myself transported to this manor in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by tarantulas, secrets, and slight shivers down my spine. The mystery portion of the story also kept me really intrigued—I had a really hard time putting But Not Too Bold down and read it in one or two sittings. The romance also had me intrigued and nervous at the same time! The mix somehow worked in combination with the atmosphere. All in all, I absolutely adored But Not Too Bold and need more from Pueyo as soon as possible.
